Can drywall go right up to the edge of a gas fireplace?
Usually yes, but only up to the line the manufacturer specifies. Most direct-vent gas fireplaces have a metal face or flange designed for a noncombustible finish to butt against, and many allow drywall right to that edge. Others require a band of noncombustible material — tile, stone, or cement board — around the opening before any drywall. The manual sets the boundary.
It depends on the unit's face
Modern direct-vent fireplaces are built to be finished cleanly, but they don't all handle the edge the same way. Many 'clean-face' units — the Heat & Glo 6000CLX is a good example — have a surround flange engineered so your finish, including drywall, can come right up to the opening with no visible frame. Others specify a required noncombustible zone: a few inches of cement board, tile, or stone around the opening before combustible drywall paper is allowed. The install manual tells us exactly which, and where the line falls.
Drywall is combustible — the paper especially
It's easy to think of drywall as fireproof because the gypsum core is. But the paper facing scorches and yellows with sustained heat, and that's what the clearances protect. Right at a hot glass edge, discolored, heat-stained drywall is a common callback we see when someone finished a fireplace without reading the listing. Above the opening the rule tightens further, since that's where the most heat rises. Keeping drywall to the specified line — or putting a noncombustible band between the opening and the drywall — is what keeps the finish looking new years later.
