Can I have a wood mantel above a gas fireplace?
Yes. A combustible wood mantel is allowed over a gas fireplace as long as it sits at or above the manufacturer's minimum clearance for how far it projects — deeper shelf, higher mount. The area directly around the opening still needs non-combustible facing. We size the mantel to the unit's chart so your timber beam is both the look you want and code-legal.
The wood is fine — the placement is the rule
There's a myth that you can't put wood near a gas fireplace. You can. Solid-wood mantels go over gas units every day; they just have to respect the appliance's published clearance-to-combustibles. That spec ties the mantel's height above the opening to its projection: a deep, chunky beam has to sit higher because it traps more of the heat rising off the glass, while a slim shelf can come down lower. Hit the chart and your wood mantel is completely legitimate.
Facing versus mantel
Two different zones, two different rules. Directly around the firebox opening the material has to be non-combustible — tile, stone, or metal — because that's where surface temperatures are highest. Above that, once you clear the required distance, a combustible wood mantel is welcome. People mix these up and either skip the non-combustible facing or assume the whole wall has to be stone. It doesn't. We draw the line for your specific unit so you know exactly where wood can start.
