Can I build my own gas fire pit or should a professional install it?
In Maggie Valley, you can build the enclosure yourself, but the propane connection is strictly licensed work. There's no natural-gas main up here at 3,000 feet — it's propane country — and elevation changes how a burner has to be set and tuned. Maggie Valley sits above 3,000 feet, one of the coldest, highest communities we serve, and everything runs on propane — there's no natural-gas main to tap. Both facts land on the burner. Propane burns hotter per unit than natural gas and needs its own orifices and pressures, and thinner mountain air changes how a flame draws and burns.
Set up wrong, a burner soots, struggles, or won't hold a clean flame — which is the last thing you want. That's the technical work a licensed gas contractor does: connecting the tank and regulator, sizing for LP, tuning the flame for the elevation, and pressure-testing the line. The stone enclosure is the part you or a hardscaper can build — block, pad, veneer — while we handle the fuel and the fire.
Rentals need it to light every time
So much of Maggie Valley is vacation rentals and cabins, and those fire features live a hard life — idle for weeks, then expected to light instantly the moment guests arrive. A gas pit that's been built and tuned properly does exactly that, but only if the burner, venting, and propane connection were done right and get a pre-season check.
