Can I build my own gas fire pit or should a professional install it?
Around Mars Hill, you can build the enclosure yourself, but the fuel connection is licensed work — and out in the Spring Creek and Gabriels Creek valleys, that usually means propane or nothing but wood. We connect the tank, size and tune the burner for LP, pressure-test the line, and permit it with Madison County. You or a hardscaper build the shell; we handle the fuel.
Rural valleys run on propane
Mars Hill has two faces — the university area near town and the rural valleys that spread out around it, up Spring Creek, Gabriels Creek, and toward Forks of Ivy, where homes rely on propane or wood heat. For a fire pit on one of those rural properties, the fuel side is a propane job: connecting at the tank and regulator, running an outdoor-rated line, sizing the burner orifices for LP, and tuning a clean flame.
Propane is heavier than air, so the enclosure has to be vented to let any stray gas escape rather than pool. All of that is licensed contractor work in North Carolina. The enclosure — block, pad, veneer — is the piece you or your hardscaper build.
Colder ground, careful sequencing
Mars Hill is one of the colder spots we serve, which makes an outdoor fire feature genuinely useful across a long shoulder season — but it also means building the base to handle freeze-thaw so the enclosure doesn't shift and crack. We spec that compacted, well-drained footing with your hardscaper, rough in the propane line before the pad is poured, and pressure-test the finished line before you light it.
Then we pull the Madison County permit and meet the inspector, the step that keeps the work to code and your insurance intact. We're about 30 minutes north of the showroom. The best time to loop us in is before the first block is set — call (828) 545-0525 to plan it.
