Can I build my own gas fire pit or should a professional install it?
In Mills River, the enclosure is a fine DIY or hardscaper job — but connecting fuel is licensed work, and out here on these large rural lots that usually means propane. We connect the tank and regulator, run the outdoor-rated line, set and tune the burner for LP, and pressure-test it, then permit the work with Henderson County. You build the shell; we handle the fire.
Propane on the big lots
Mills River is farmland and forest with houses spread across large lots, and a lot of them run on propane rather than a natural-gas main. For a fire pit, that means the fuel side is a full propane setup — connecting at the tank and regulator, running an outdoor-rated line that may travel a good distance across the property, sizing the burner orifices for LP, and tuning the flame so it burns clean rather than sooty.
Propane is also heavier than air, so the enclosure's venting has to let any stray fuel escape rather than settle. All of that is licensed contractor work by law. The shell — the retaining-wall block, the seat wall, the stone veneer — is the half you or your hardscaper can build. We coordinate the two so the line and burner opening land where they should.
Plan it before entertaining season
The open Mills River valley is made for outdoor living, and a fire pit becomes the center of the patio once the evenings cool. The trick is timing. If you want it ready for the summer and fall entertaining stretch, plan it in late spring — permits, the propane connection, and the hardscape build all take some lead time, and rushing it in-season is how corners get cut.
We'll walk the site, spec the base and drainage with your hardscaper, rough in the propane line before the pad goes down, and pull the Henderson County permit. We're about 25 minutes south of the showroom. Call (828) 545-0525 and we'll get it on the calendar with room to spare.
