Can I build my own gas fire pit or should a professional install it?

In Waynesville, you can absolutely build the fire pit enclosure yourself, but the fuel connection is licensed work we handle. The first question up here is which fuel you've got — parts of town reach natural gas while many homes run propane — because that decides burner orifice, pressure, and how we tune the flame at nearly 2,650 feet. Then we permit it with Haywood County.

Fuel first, then the flame

Waynesville is mixed-fuel country, and that shapes a fire pit more than most people expect. A home in Hazelwood or downtown might reach a natural-gas line, while a place up toward Lake Junaluska or out on the ridges runs propane from a tank.

The two aren't interchangeable at the burner — propane burns hotter per unit and needs different orifices and pressures, and a burner set up for the wrong fuel soots and struggles. That's exactly why the gas half is reserved for a licensed contractor. You or a mason build the shell — the block, the pad, the veneer — and we identify the fuel, size and set the listed burner to match it, vent and drain the enclosure, and dial the flame in.

A fire pit earns its keep at this elevation

At nearly 2,650 feet, Waynesville runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than the lower WNC towns, and the heating season stretches roughly three weeks longer than Asheville's. An outdoor fire feature gets used hard here — spring and fall evenings on the patio are cool long after the valley towns have warmed up.

It's worth building to last. We'll spec a compacted, freeze-thaw-ready base with your hardscaper so the enclosure doesn't shift, rough in the gas line before the caps go on, pull the Haywood County permit, and pressure-test everything. We're about 35 minutes west of the showroom, so it's easy to come look at your site first. Call (828) 545-0525 before you build.
