Can I burn wood in my gas fire pit or outdoor gas fireplace?
No — never burn wood, charcoal, or manufactured logs in a gas fire pit or gas outdoor fireplace. They're engineered for a clean gas flame, and a wood fire's high, uneven heat can warp the burner, crack lava rock or fire glass, damage the igniter and valve, and void the warranty. If you want real wood fire, that's a separate wood-burning pit or fireplace.
Why a gas burner can't take a wood fire
A gas fire pit's burner is thin aluminum or light-gauge steel, sized for the steady, even heat of a gas flame. A wood fire runs hotter in concentrated spots and swings all over the place — that uneven heat warps the burner ring, distorts the pan, and cooks the igniter electrode and the gas valve sitting right there beside the flame.
The media takes a beating too. Lava rock and fire glass are rated for gas heat, not the direct contact of glowing wood coals — real embers can crack or shatter fire glass, and it can pop. Ash and cinders settle into the burner ports and clog them, so the gas side never runs right again.
The warranty and the hazard
Burning wood in a gas unit voids the manufacturer's warranty on every one of the brands we carry, and it turns a small problem into an expensive one. It's also a genuine safety issue — you've got hot wood embers next to a live gas line and valve.
Same rule applies indoors: don't set a real wood log on top of a gas log set, and don't mix fuels. These appliances are built to do one thing cleanly, and they do it well when you let them.
If it's real wood you're after
Nothing wrong with wanting the crackle and coals of a real fire outside — our cool mountain evenings make an outdoor fire feature earn its keep most of the year. The answer just isn't to abuse a gas pit; it's to install a dedicated wood-burning fire pit or an outdoor wood fireplace built for it.
