Can I cook food over my gas fire pit?
Sometimes, but not by default — most gas fire pits are decorative and burn on lava rock or glass media that food drippings will ruin. If cooking matters to you, tell us up front so we can plan a pit built for it, or better, a built-in grill on the same gas line. Roasting an occasional marshmallow over a clean flame is different from grilling dinner.
Most fire pits are for looks, not lunch
A typical gas fire pit burns on a bed of decorative lava rock or tempered fire glass, and that media is the problem. Grease and food drippings soak into it, clog the burner ports underneath, smoke, and smell — and they don't clean out. A pit like the Napoleon Uptown is built to be a gathering flame, not a cooktop. An occasional marshmallow over a clean, high flame won't hurt much; grilling burgers over the glass will.
The right way to cook outdoors on gas
If cooking is the goal, the appliance you want is a built-in grill hard-plumbed to the gas line, ideally as part of an outdoor kitchen. We handle the gas and appliance side — running the buried, outdoor-rated line and connecting the grill or side burner — and coordinate with your builder or hardscaper on the counters and stone. That gets you a real cooking surface next to your fire feature, each doing the job it's built for. If you already have a pit and want a dedicated cooking flame added, tell us and we'll plan it.
