Can I convert my gas fireplace back to wood-burning, and is it worth it versus keeping gas?

Which fireplace you actually own
Past the chimney, the job depends on the type. Gas logs in an original masonry firebox convert cleanly — set out, line capped by a licensed contractor, flue verified for wood. A gas insert in old masonry is workable once the liner's sound. But a direct-vent gas unit in a framed chase never burned wood and can't be converted — that's a full wood-rated rebuild. If you're a landlord weighing this, gas is usually the lower-maintenance amenity for a rental; wood asks tenants to tend it.
