Yes — and in Asheville we do this two ways. Many Montford and North Asheville homes already have an original masonry chimney in the basement; if it inspects sound and gets a liner, a stove can tie into it. Newer South Asheville builds usually need a fresh Class A insulated flue run up through the floors and out past the roof.

Which route fits comes down to what your basement already has. The masonry chimneys in many Montford, North Asheville, and Biltmore Village homes were built for a different age of fire, so before a stove ties in we inspect the flue, check the liner, and confirm the diameter actually suits a modern stove — an oversized or unlined flue drafts poorly and isn't safe to run. When the brick checks out, a stainless liner brings it to spec; when it doesn't, a new insulated chimney is the cleaner answer. We'd rather run one more inspection than trust a chimney that isn't right.
What a basement install needs beyond the flue
The stove still needs measured clearances to framing and finished walls, listed heat shields where the room is tight, and a hearth pad rated to protect the floor under it. Below grade, a well-sealed basement can starve a fire for air, so we usually feed combustion straight from outdoors with an outside-air kit.
