Can I put my gas fire pit on a timer?
Usually not with a plug-in wall timer — most gas fire pits use a manual valve, a match-lit striker, or a push-button igniter, none of which a household timer can operate. Some pits with an electronic ignition module can pair with a compatible automation control made for that system. Either way, never leave any gas fire pit to light or run unattended.
Why a hardware-store timer won't work
A lamp or outlet timer switches electricity on and off. A gas fire pit's flame is controlled by a gas valve, not a plug. On a manual-valve or key-valve pit, and on a match-lit striker pit, there's nothing electrical for a timer to hook into — you physically open the gas and light it. So a plug-in timer has no job to do.
That's a good thing, honestly. The whole point of a timer is walking away and trusting the machine, and an open flame outdoors isn't something you want lighting itself while no one's watching.
When a timer is actually possible
Fire pits with a full electronic-ignition module are the exception. Some of those systems accept a purpose-built automation or smart control that can operate the valve. Even then, it's a control made for that ignition system — not a timer from the shelf — and the safe use is a scheduled shut-off, not a scheduled start.
Think of it as a backstop: a control that kills the gas after a set number of minutes so a pit can't run for hours if someone forgets it. Setting a pit to spark itself alight on a schedule is a different thing, and we don't recommend it.
The rule that overrides all of it
Never leave a gas fire pit burning unattended, and never set one to ignite itself while you're away. Wind, kids, pets, and a low pool of flame at ground level are exactly why fire pits are meant to be lit and watched by a person.
