Can I rearrange my gas logs to change how the flames look?
No — don't rearrange gas logs for a different flame look. The layout is certified by the manufacturer for clean, safe combustion, and moving logs to "improve" the flame forces impingement, sooting, and on ventless sets, carbon-monoxide risk. It also voids the unit's listing. If you want a different flame, that's a different log set, not a rearrangement.
Why the arrangement isn't yours to change
It's a tempting thought — the flame would look fuller if that back log were just a little higher, wouldn't it? The problem is that the placement you're looking at was tested and certified in exactly that configuration. The logs rest on locating pins that hold the flame in a pattern engineered to burn clean. Rearrange them and the flame almost always ends up striking a log at a bad angle, and a fireplace that burned perfectly clean starts throwing dry black soot onto the logs, the glass, and the flue within a handful of fires. What looks like a small aesthetic tweak is really a change to how the appliance combusts.
The safety line
On a vented set, a bad rearrangement mostly costs you soot, clarity, and cleanup. On a ventless (vent-free) set it crosses into genuine safety, because those units burn in the room and incomplete combustion from misplaced logs produces carbon monoxide. The oxygen-depletion sensor is a shutoff of last resort, not a license to move logs around and see how the flame looks. And either way, "customizing" the layout voids the manufacturer's listing and, with it, our workmanship coverage — because the appliance is no longer configured the way it was tested and approved to run.
Want a different look? Do it the right way
If you genuinely don't love your flame, the answer is a different appliance or log set, not a rearrangement — and there's real range to choose from.
