Can I replace broken fireplace glass with regular glass?
No — Clyde's 1960s-to-80s ranch homes are prime for insert upgrades, and once a sealed unit's in, its cracked pane can't be replaced with ordinary glass. The panel is ceramic, rated for thousand-plus-degree heat and cut to the model; window or tempered glass cracks or shatters. And in this river-valley damp the gasket around it often needs replacing too. Only the factory pane is safe.

The pane is also cut to the firebox and bedded in a high-temp gasket, so a generic sheet won't seat or hold the sealed-combustion seal that keeps byproducts out of your living room.
