A conventional gas fireplace throws a lot of its heat straight up the face of the wall above it. Heat rises, and a flat wall does nothing to stop it. That zone can climb well past 100°F on a hard-burning evening — hot enough to shorten the life of a mounted TV, warp its housing, or soften the adhesives inside. Without a mantel or heat shield to deflect that rising heat, a screen mounted directly above a standard unit is asking for trouble.
