Yes — a reclaimed barn beam is one of the most popular mantels we install in WNC, and for good reason: instant patina, real history, and a perfect fit for cabin and mountain-modern homes. Two things matter: it has to be checked for old nails, insects, and moisture, and it must be mounted at the appliance's required clearance above the opening.
Why they look so right here
Nothing gives a fireplace character like a timber that's already lived a hundred years. Reclaimed oak, chestnut, and heart-pine beams from old barns and mills carry saw marks, checking, worn edges, and a depth of color no new wood or stain can imitate.

The prep that keeps it safe
Old wood comes with old baggage, and we deal with it before it goes up. Beams get inspected and cleaned of embedded nails, staples, and hardware; checked and treated for any wood-boring insects so you're not importing pests; and allowed to acclimate for moisture so a wet-in-the-middle timber doesn't crack or move once it's in a heated room.
We also plan the mounting — a solid beam is heavy, and it has to be anchored into real structure with a concealed cleat or steel rod, not just glued to a stone face.
Clearance is still the boss
A reclaimed beam is still combustible wood, so it lives by the same rule as any wood mantel: it has to sit at or beyond the fireplace's required clearance to combustibles above the opening. On a hot wood-burning or gas unit that can mean mounting the beam higher than you'd guess, or following the manufacturer's mantel-height chart to the letter.
