Can I use ventless gas logs on a covered porch?
No — ventless gas logs are built and listed for indoor use inside a firebox, not for a covered porch or any outdoor space. They release all their combustion products, including moisture and a trace of carbon monoxide, into the room they sit in, relying on that room's air volume and an oxygen-depletion sensor calibrated for indoors. For a porch, you want an outdoor-rated unit instead.
Why ventless logs and porches don't mix
Vent-free logs work by a specific bargain: with the damper closed, nearly all the heat — and all the combustion byproducts, moisture and a trace of carbon monoxide included — stays in the room, which is why they're efficient supplemental heaters indoors. But that bargain depends on a sized indoor room volume and an oxygen-depletion sensor tuned for that setting, and they're already restricted or prohibited in some applications like bedrooms and baths.
A covered porch is none of the listed conditions: it isn't the enclosed indoor room the sensor expects, drafts play havoc with the flame and the shutoff, and the unit isn't weather-rated to sit outside. It's simply the wrong tool for the spot.
What actually belongs on a covered porch
For fire under a porch roof, reach for equipment made for outside. A vented outdoor gas log set installed in an outdoor-rated firebox — outdoor log sets are engineered differently from the indoor ones — gives you flame that vents up and away.
A purpose-built outdoor gas fireplace with a proper flue does the same on a larger scale. And for a fully covered, low-clearance spot, an electric fireplace delivers ambiance with zero combustion to worry about. Any of these is a safe, listed way to get what ventless logs can't give you here.
