Can my general contractor install the fireplace during a remodel?
Your general contractor can frame the opening, build the chase, and handle drywall and finish — but in North Carolina they legally can't run or connect the gas line unless they hold a gas contractor's license, and most don't. The smart play is coordination: your GC does the carpentry and finish, we do the appliance, venting, gas line, permit, and inspection.
Where the GC's work ends and ours begins
A good general contractor is invaluable on a remodel — framing the feature wall, building the chase for the vent, and handling the tile, stone, or drywall around the finished fireplace. That's their lane, and we work alongside plenty of them.
What a GC generally can't do is the fuel connection. In North Carolina, running or extending a gas line is licensed work. A general contractor legally can't connect the fireplace to gas unless they carry the gas license — and if they tell you they'll 'handle the gas' without one, that's a permit-and-insurance problem waiting to surface.
How coordination actually works
On a remodel, timing matters. We like to be in early enough to rough in the vent and stub the gas line before the walls close up, then come back to set and finish the appliance after drywall and before the final tile or stone. Your GC and our crew simply sequence around each other.
We do the technical and gas side; the GC does the carpentry and finish. We pull the gas and mechanical permit and meet the inspector, so the licensed portion is documented and code-legal — which protects the value of the whole remodel.
