Can one gas fireplace or wood stove heat an entire house?
In Brevard, one wood stove or propane fireplace can hold most of an open cabin or home, but two Transylvania County realities shape it: much of Brevard runs on propane rather than a gas main, and 80-plus inches of yearly rain is hard on chimneys. A well-sized central wood stove gets closest to whole-home heat, especially off-grid.
Propane country, sized right
Out here past the Asheville and Hendersonville gas mains, most homes burn propane — and propane runs hotter per unit than natural gas, so the appliance has to be set up with the right orifices and pressures. Get that right and a Kozy Heat propane fireplace, built for cold-climate cabins, or a serious wood stove can carry an open main level. Get it wrong and you soot up the glass and lose efficiency. That fuel setup is licensed work; we permit and pressure-test every line and coordinate the tank with your supplier.
Rain works against your chimney
Brevard's wet season from March through June cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers, and crawl spaces and chimney chases here stay damp. A tired, moisture-damaged masonry chimney is not the foundation for whole-home wood heat. Often the durable answer is a sealed unit venting out a sidewall, or a stainless-lined insert that sidesteps the failing flue — both far less bothered by Transylvania's rainfall than an open masonry system.
What one hearth can and can't do
A single hearth heats the volume it sits in and won't turn corners into closed rooms down a hall — that's true at any elevation. For a Connestee Falls or Sherwood Forest cabin you want to hold warm when a storm drops the power, a central wood stove is the real off-grid answer, since it needs nothing but the wood you've stacked.
