Yes, and Asheville sees it two ways. In historic Montford and North Asheville, sealed inserts retrofitted into old masonry vent through sidewall caps set close to neighboring walls, where wind-funneled leaves collect; newer South Asheville clean-face units often terminate low near decks and grade. Two housing types, two blockage habits
Asheville's older core — Montford, North Asheville, West Asheville — is dense lots and original masonry, and when those open fireboxes get converted to sealed gas inserts the new termination often lands on a sidewall a few feet from the neighbor's wall, where wind funnels leaf litter into a narrow gap and packs it against the cap. South Asheville's newer construction leans the other way: clean-face and linear gas units with terminations set low near a deck or grade. In both, the direct-vent unit draws all its combustion air and pushes all its exhaust through that one coaxial cap. Choke it and the sealed firebox keeps running while combustion turns incomplete — a low orange flame, fogged and blackening glass, and carbon monoxide rising before the flame sensor drops the unit into lockout.
