Can snow or debris blocking the outside vent make a gas fireplace dangerous?
Yes — and in Brevard the usual culprit isn't snow, it's water and what grows in it. With 80-plus inches of rain a year, wet leaf mats, moss, and rust close in on an outside gas vent, and birds favor the sheltered louvers. A blocked cap starves combustion and can raise carbon monoxide even while the sealed firebox looks fine indoors.
The wettest kind of blockage
Transylvania County's rainfall is the story here — it cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers, and it does slower damage to fireplace terminations too. A cap that stays damp from March through June grows moss, mats with sodden leaves, and corrodes at the louvers until airflow drops. Because a direct-vent unit breathes only through that one coaxial cap, a partial choke is enough to tip combustion rich — a listless orange flame, soot on the glass, and rising carbon monoxide before the flame sensor forces a lockout. Crawl spaces and chimney chases around town already fight moisture, and the same wet air works on a low vent.
Cabins, and the propane behind them
Out toward Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest, many Brevard homes are cabins on propane. A propane direct-vent fireplace vents exactly like a natural-gas one, so the blockage rule is identical: keep the cap clear, keep it draining, keep the shrubs cut back. Clearing leaves and trimming plants is homeowner work; the vent, its joints, and its clearances are ours.
