Can you run an electric fireplace's flames without the heat on?
Yes — nearly every modern electric fireplace lets you run the flame effect with the heater switched off, so you get the glow year-round without warming the room. The flames are made by LEDs and light tricks that draw very little power, completely independent of the heating element. It's a feature gas and wood simply can't offer.
Flame and heat are separate systems
Inside an electric fireplace, the flame effect and the heater are wired as two independent systems. The flames come from LED lights bouncing off a rotating reflector or projected onto a screen — and in some units a fine water mist — all of which sip a tiny bit of electricity. The heat comes from a completely separate element and fan. Flip the heater off and the flames keep right on dancing, drawing about as much power as a couple of light bulbs. That's why the Dimplex units we carry advertise a flame-only 'summer mode': you get the full look of the fireplace in August, with no warmth added to the room at all.
Why that actually matters
This is one of electric's real advantages over gas and wood. A gas fireplace makes heat any time there's a flame, and a wood fire is nothing but heat by definition — neither gives you the glow without the warmth. With electric, you can run the fireplace as a piece of lighting and atmosphere three seasons out of four: a soft glow behind dinner, a nightlight in a child's room, background ambiance on a cool mountain evening that doesn't quite call for heat. In our climate, where a big chunk of the year is too mild for a real fire but still pretty by firelight, that flexibility gets used constantly.
One honest footnote
Running flames-only uses very little electricity, but it isn't quite zero — and, like everything electric, it still depends on the grid, so the flame goes dark in a power outage right along with the heat. If a customer's goal is a beautiful flame with easy placement and low running cost, electric is a great fit and does exactly what they want.
