How do electric fireplaces create the flame effect?
Electric fireplaces fake flame with light and motion — no fire involved. LEDs shine onto or through reflective and refractive parts, and a slowly rotating component or a projected image makes the light flicker and dance so it reads as flame. The classic trick: light, a mirror, and motion
The traditional electric flame uses a light source, a set of reflective surfaces, and a slowly turning rod or wheel above the bulbs. As it rotates, it chops and scatters the light so the reflection wavers on the back panel and across the fake logs or crystals, mimicking the random flicker of real fire.
Simple versions look like exactly what they are; better ones use shaped optics and a glowing ember bed to sell the illusion.
How the good ones get 3D
Higher-end units go further. Dimplex — which we carry as our electric line, and which makes about the most convincing electric flame on the market — uses layered LEDs and projection so the flames appear to have depth, sitting in front of and behind the log set rather than painted flat on the back wall.

Flame without heat, and why that's the appeal
Because it's all lighting, the flame effect runs independently of the heater. You can enjoy the glow on a warm July evening with zero heat output, then add warmth when the mountain air turns. There's no combustion, no soot, nothing to vent — which is exactly why electric works in spots a real fire can't easily go.
