Do fireplaces and chimneys in older homes need more frequent maintenance?
It varies with the home, and Mars Hill has two kinds. University-area rentals lean on easy-use gas fireplaces that need their yearly service; the rural Spring Creek and Gabriels Creek valley homes run older propane and wood systems that ask for more. On the rural, older side especially, the answer is usually yes — more frequent, more thorough attention.
Two towns in one
Around Mars Hill University the rentals favor simple gas fireplaces — light, warm, predictable, one annual tune-up. Head out to Spring Creek, Gabriels Creek, or Forks of Ivy and it's propane tanks and wood stoves on older rural properties. Wood means creosote and regular sweeping; propane means orifices, pressures, and an aging regulator to keep an eye on. The older and more rural the home, the more its heating setup needs a closer, more regular look than a low-use rental in town.
Cold spot, hard-working flues
Mars Hill is one of the colder places we serve, so these homes fire early and often and the flues do real work. On older masonry that means more thermal cycling on mortar and crowns and more creosote in wood chimneys — poor draft on an old flue only makes the buildup worse. The appliance keeps its annual service; relining, crown repair, and waterproofing are the age-driven extras that run on their own schedule.
Licensed on both fuels
Whether it's natural gas in town or propane up a valley, running and connecting the fuel line is licensed work in North Carolina — we permit it with Madison County, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. Mars Hill is about 30 minutes north of our Asheville showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.
