Do gas fireplaces and inserts require a hearth extension, and what size?
Most direct-vent and sealed gas fireplaces and gas inserts do NOT require a noncombustible hearth extension — the sealed glass front and cool cabinet keep floor temperatures safe, so many install flush to carpet or wood floor. Wood-burning units are the ones with strict hearth-extension rules. Always follow the specific model's listed clearances, which we verify against the manufacturer's manual.
Gas is different from wood here
The short version: sealed gas fireplaces and gas inserts generally do not need a noncombustible hearth extension the way a wood-burning fireplace does. A direct-vent gas unit burns behind a sealed glass front, the cabinet stays cool along the sides and floor, and there are no sparks or embers to throw — so many models are listed to install right up to carpet or hardwood. Wood-burning fireplaces, inserts, and stoves are the ones with strict hearth-extension requirements, because real fire drops embers and radiates serious heat down onto the floor in front of the opening.
The manual sets the rule, not a rule of thumb
Every unit is listed and tested to its own clearances, and that listing is the law — for the installer and for the county inspector. Some gas models still call for a small protected area in front of the glass; most direct-vent units don't. We read the specific manufacturer's manual for your model before we set anything, install to those exact numbers, and pull the permit so the inspector signs off. This is exactly the kind of detail that slips through when a firebox is bought from a furniture showroom and handed to whoever's around to make it burn — and it's why single-source, licensed installation matters.
Hearths you add for looks, not for code
Plenty of our customers still build a raised or flush hearth under a gas fireplace purely for the look — a stone or tile slab that grounds the fireplace and gives a great-room anchor its weight. That's a design choice, not a safety requirement, and we honor the unit's clearances either way. For wood-burning, the hearth extension is non-negotiable and sized by the listing, typically reaching a set distance in front of and to the sides of the opening.
