Do I have to take the glass off my gas fireplace to get to the pilot light?
Usually no. Most direct-vent gas fireplaces have a lower louver panel or grille below the glass, and the control knob and pilot igniter sit behind it — reachable without touching the sealed glass front. On many older units and some log sets, though, the pilot sits behind the glass, and that glass front has to come off first.
Where the controls usually hide
On most modern direct-vent gas fireplaces, you don't touch the glass at all. The pilot, the control knob, and the igniter live behind a lower louver grille or a slim access panel below the glass, and the decorative front typically lifts up and out, unclips, or is held by magnets. Pop that off and everything you need to light the pilot is right there. It's designed this way on purpose — the sealed glass front is part of the venting system, and forcing it can crack a panel that isn't cheap to replace.
When the glass does have to come off
Some setups are the exception. On many older units and certain gas log installations, the pilot sits behind the glass or firescreen, with no way to reach it from below. Here's the important part: a direct-vent glass front is sealed against a gasket, and that seal is what keeps combustion gases out of your room. Pulling it and reseating it wrong compromises that seal. We see this weekly in older Asheville and Hendersonville homes where a builder-grade unit is still going strong. If your pilot is only reachable behind sealed glass, we'd rather handle it on a service visit than have you force a gasketed front.
