Do I need a heat-resistant pad or shield under a fire pit on a deck?
Yes, on any combustible deck. A fire-pit heat shield or deck-protector pad spreads and blocks the radiant heat coming off the burner pan so it can't scorch, soften, or char the surface below — even gas units with ventilated bases should have one on wood or composite. On stone, brick, or concrete, it's optional.
What a heat barrier actually does
A fire pit's flame gets the attention, but the quiet threat to a deck is the radiant heat that comes off the bottom of the burner pan. A heat-resistant pad or deck shield intercepts that heat, spreads it out, and puts an air gap between the unit and the boards so no single spot gets hot enough to scorch, warp, or char.
On heat-sensitive composite it's the difference between a deck that lasts and one that develops a permanent shadow of discoloration under the fire pit within a season.
Which surfaces need it
The rule is simple: combustible surfaces always, non-combustible surfaces usually not. Wood and composite decking need a listed pad every time. A stone, brick, paver, or poured-concrete patio generally doesn't require one for heat, though a pad can still keep soot and the occasional grease drip off finished stone.
Beyond the pad, the unit's feet or standoffs matter — they create the air gap — and the manufacturer's clearance-to-combustibles rating is the number that governs the whole install, pad included.
