Do I need a permit to install gas logs in an existing fireplace?
Yes — in Sylva the permit runs through Jackson County, and you'll almost always need one. Adding a gas log set to an existing fireplace means making a new fuel connection, which is permitted, inspected work. The permit covers the gas line and its pressure test, not the older masonry common in Dillsboro and around Cullowhee.
Rentals and historic masonry, hard-used flues
Sylva's housing runs from student and rental housing near WCU — heavily used and inconsistently maintained — to historic Dillsboro homes with older masonry chimneys. In both, a gas log set is a common upgrade, and in both the firebox already standing isn't what the permit examines. The Tuckasegee valley's cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade flue liners fast, so while we're setting logs we'll flag a failing damper or liner. But the permit itself is strictly about the new gas connection holding pressure.
Mixed fuel, one licensed hookup
Sylva is mixed-fuel: some homes tap natural gas, others run propane up the coves. Whichever you have, connecting a log set is licensed work in North Carolina. On propane we set the regulator and confirm the logs are configured for LP; on gas we tap the line safely. A mason or furniture showroom can sell you a beautiful set, but they legally can't connect it to fuel — that's why we permit and pressure-test every line ourselves rather than hand you off to someone hunting for a license.
