Do I need a spark arrestor cap on my chimney?
It depends on what's behind your damper, and in Asheville that splits right down the middle. Burn wood through an original masonry flue — common in Montford and North Asheville — and yes, a cap with spark-arrestor mesh is standard safety gear. Run a sealed direct-vent gas fireplace in a newer South Asheville home, and there's no chimney to cap at all.
Two Ashevilles, two answers
The city's housing stock does the deciding. Turn-of-the-century homes around Montford, Grove Park, and North Asheville were built with open masonry fireplaces that still vent up an old clay flue — those draft hard on a cold night and can carry live embers past the crown, so that flue wants a stainless arrestor cap. The clean-face gas fireplaces going into newer West Asheville and Biltmore Village builds are usually sealed direct-vent units that terminate through a sidewall — no open flue, no ember to screen. Figuring out which you have is really the entire question, and it's the first thing we check.

The same cap earns its keep the rest of the year: it blocks the rain that drives freeze-thaw cracking into masonry crowns at our elevation, and it shuts out the squirrels and chimney swifts that treat an open clay flue like a hollow tree waiting to be nested.
