Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

How often should a chimney be swept to prevent a chimney fire?

Have the chimney inspected every year and swept whenever it's carrying about an eighth of an inch of creosote — for most WNC households burning a few nights a week, that works out to a sweep every season. If wood is your primary heat, like a lot of homes up our mountain roads, plan on a mid-winter check too.

The standard: inspect yearly, sweep on condition

The CSIA and NFPA standard is an annual chimney inspection, with sweeping whenever the buildup warrants it — and the working trigger sweeps use is roughly an eighth of an inch of creosote. For a typical household burning a few evenings a week through a WNC winter, that shakes out to about one sweep a year. The inspection is the real point, though: it's what tells you whether this year needs a sweep, a cap repair, or nothing at all.

When once a year isn't enough

Homes that heat primarily with wood — and up our mountain roads, plenty do — can load a flue faster than the calendar. Green wood, overnight smolder burns, and cold exterior chimneys all accelerate buildup, and a hard season can deposit in weeks what a light one deposits all winter. After Helene, when so many WNC homes leaned on wood heat through the outage, we scoped flues that had aged a full season in about a month. If wood is your main heat, have someone look mid-winter.

The right time on the calendar

Late summer or early fall, before you're depending on the fireplace — that's when to book. You beat the first-cold-snap rush, and the same visit catches nesting debris, a failing cap, or mortar trouble while there's still warm weather to fix it in. A clean, inspected flue is the cheapest fire protection a wood-burning home can buy. Call (828) 545-0525 and we'll get your chimney looked at before the season.
