How often should a chimney be swept to prevent a chimney fire?
Black Mountain's answer bends with the valley. Swannanoa Valley temperature inversions leave mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, so cold flues and long burns are the norm and a wood-burner can want more than one sweep a season. The standard holds — yearly inspection, sweep at about an eighth-inch of creosote — but Montreat's shaded, damp lots push the inspection to matter as much as the broom.

Sitting at 2,405 feet with regular inversions, Black Mountain hands wood-burners a specific problem: the chimney is often colder than the room. A cold flue drafts poorly — the smoke cools before it clears and drops more of its tar on the walls — so the same amount of burning builds creosote faster here than in a warmer spot. That constant damp is hard on masonry — it holds water in the crown and brick and rusts dampers — and it means the annual inspection is looking for water intrusion and liner trouble alongside creosote. Overhanging limbs also drop debris and feed the nesting that blocks a flue, another reason the eyes-on check earns its place in this town.
Gas homes still get a yearly check
