How often should a chimney be swept to prevent a chimney fire?
In Brevard the sweep is only half the job — the rain is the other half. Transylvania County catches 80-plus inches a year, and that water cracks crowns, spalls brick, and rusts dampers faster than creosote alone would ever threaten you. Plan on a yearly inspection with a sweep at the eighth-inch mark, and expect the inspection to find water damage as often as buildup.
Rain writes the inspection list
Most towns think of a chimney check as a creosote question. Brevard homeowners should think of it as a moisture question first. Eighty inches of annual rainfall — with a long wet stretch from March into June — works into every seam: it crazes the concrete crown, freezes and spalls the brick face, and rusts a steel damper until it won't seat. Any of those lets water into the flue and heat toward framing. So while we sweep the creosote on schedule, the yearly inspection here is really hunting the storm damage that a dry-climate chimney would never see.
Cabins and chases hide the trouble
A good share of Brevard's homes are mountain cabins with boxed chimney chases and moisture-prone crawl spaces — Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest, out toward Pisgah Forest. A chase can look fine from the deck while the liner and framing behind it are quietly taking on water. That's why we don't just sweep and leave; the inspection scopes the flue and checks the cap, flashing, and chase top where WNC rain does its damage.

A stainless cap and sound crown are the cheapest protection a Brevard flue can carry, and a wood-burner still needs its yearly inspection and condition-based sweep on top of that.
