Candler, North Carolina

How often should a chimney be swept to prevent a chimney fire?

Candler's fast-growing subdivisions mostly went in with basic decorative gas fireboxes — clean-burning units that build no creosote and want a yearly appliance check rather than a sweep. Much of the surrounding Hominy Valley and Pisgah Highway area is propane country. Any wood-burner in the mix follows the real rule: a yearly inspection and a sweep once creosote reaches about an eighth of an inch.

Decorative fireboxes, not creosote makers

A lot of what went into Candler's new construction is a basic builder-grade gas firebox — decorative-first, and clean-burning. Gas, whether on the main or on propane out toward Pisgah Highway, doesn't deposit creosote, so the yearly job on these units is checking the sealed vent, testing the ignition, and clearing the burner, not running a brush down a flue. Many owners here tell us they want a real heat-producing upgrade within a few years; when that happens, a sealed insert or a wood-burner changes the maintenance story.

Hominy Valley's air-quality angle

Candler sits in the Hominy Valley bowl, where cold air and woodsmoke can settle — one reason clean-burning sealed appliances are a smart fit here. If you do heat with wood in the valley, a clean, well-drafting flue isn't only fire safety; it means more complete combustion and less smoke hanging in the bowl. That's another reason the yearly inspection-and-sweep pays off: a creosote-clogged, poorly drafting chimney smokes more and risks more, exactly what a valley community doesn't need.

Fifteen minutes west

Candler is about 15 minutes west of our Asheville showroom, so we're out this way often. Book a pre-season check in late summer or early fall — gas or wood — before the valley cools and the calendar fills. As a licensed gas contractor we can also service the propane side and the line feeding it. Call (828) 545-0525.
