Do I still need my chimney swept if I only burned a few fires this year?
You still need the annual inspection, but a light year may not warrant a full sweep. Sweeping is based on buildup — about an eighth-inch of creosote — so a handful of fires with seasoned wood often doesn't reach it. The inspection still stands, because a barely-used chimney can hide nests, moisture, cracks, or a bad cap regardless of how little you burned.
Sweep on buildup, inspect on the calendar
These are two different things, and separating them answers the question. A sweep removes creosote, and creosote only builds when you burn — so yes, a few fires means far less of it, and if you burned clean, dry hardwood you may genuinely be under the eighth-inch threshold that calls for cleaning. The inspection, though, isn't about how much you burned; NFPA and CSIA want eyes on the chimney every year, use or no use. So barely burning is a fine reason to maybe skip the sweep, not the inspection.
A quiet chimney has its own problems
Low use doesn't mean low risk. The chimneys that surprise people are often the lightly-used ones. A flue that sits idle is prime real estate for birds, squirrels, and wasps to move in. None of that depends on how many fires you lit — and a blockage you don't know about is dangerous the moment you finally light one.
