Does a fireplace I never use still need to be inspected?

Yes. An unused fireplace still needs periodic inspection — arguably more than a used one. Idle chimneys attract bird and animal nests, collect moisture that rusts gas components and cracks masonry, and hide gas leaks nobody's around to smell. Before you ever relight it, or if you're buying or selling, get it inspected.

Idle doesn't mean safe

A fireplace that never runs isn't preserving itself in place — it's slowly collecting the problems of neglect. Chimneys and vents that sit open become prime nesting spots for birds and squirrels; we clear blocked flues in WNC every season, often from homes where nobody had burned a fire in years. Meanwhile the gas line and connections to an unused gas fireplace can still develop a slow leak, and there's no regular use — and no nose in the room — to catch it early.

Moisture, rust, and masonry

Our mountain climate is hard on idle hearths. An unused firebox and chimney collect condensation, and that moisture rusts gas burners and valves and works into masonry, where our freeze-thaw winters crack crowns and mortar joints. A fireplace you're "saving" can quietly deteriorate to the point that relighting it is genuinely unsafe. A periodic inspection catches the rust, the blockage, or the masonry damage while it's still a small fix.

Before you relight, or list the house

Two moments make inspection essential: before you relight a fireplace that's been dormant, and when you buy or sell the home. If you've just moved into an Asheville-area house and don't know the fireplace's history, don't light it until it's been checked — you don't know what's in the flue or whether the last service ever happened. A real-estate or Level 2 inspection is exactly what we do for these. Call (828) 545-0525.
