Water works into the crown and mortar, freezes and expands at 2,200-plus feet, and opens cracks; it rusts a damper shut and corrodes gas burners and valves you never see. The crawl spaces and chimney chases common on downtown homes and the cabins around Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest are especially prone to trapping that moisture. A fireplace you're preserving by not using can quietly rot to where relighting it is genuinely unsafe — and a periodic inspection is what catches the rust, the spalling, and the blockage while each is still a small fix.
