Do see-through fireplaces heat as well as single-sided fireplaces?
Not quite — a see-through fireplace splits its heat between two rooms, so neither side gets the full punch a single-sided unit delivers. Two glass faces also radiate in both directions, which is the point, but it means less concentrated warmth where you sit. If one room is the priority, single-sided heats it better; if you want to warm two spaces at once, see-through earns its keep.
Where the heat goes in a see-through
A gas fireplace's glass is its main radiant surface, and a see-through has two of them facing opposite directions. Whatever the unit produces gets divided between the rooms — so the living-room side of a see-through never feels as strong as a comparable single-sided unit pushing everything one way off a reflective back panel. Manufacturers also tend to design see-throughs around the view — a tall, open sight line through the flame — rather than around squeezing every last BTU into one space. That's not a flaw; it's the whole point of the product.

When splitting the heat is exactly what you want
If the fireplace sits in a wall between a kitchen and a living room, or a dining room and a den, dividing the output is a feature, not a bug. Two rooms get flame and warmth from one appliance, one gas line, one vent run — and on a cool mountain evening that's often all either room needs. The mistake we see is treating a see-through as the primary heater for one specific room. If one space genuinely needs heating muscle — a big great room with tall ceilings, say — size up substantially or go single-sided and let the see-through idea go.
How to decide
Our sizing rule of thumb is around 20 Btu per square foot in a moderate climate — and WNC's elevation pushes that up. A see-through has to clear that bar for two rooms at once, which narrows the field of models that qualify, so the math is worth doing before you fall in love with the look.
