Many Backgrounds. One Standard.

Do see-through gas fireplaces need any special maintenance?

Yes — a see-through (double-sided) gas fireplace has two glass panels and two rooms' worth of exposure, so it takes a bit more cleaning and a more careful burn check than a single-sided unit. Otherwise the annual service is the same: burner, pilot, venting, and gas connections cleaned and tested once a year.

Two sides, twice the glass

A see-through fireplace opens to two rooms, which means two glass panels — front and back — that both show haze, soot, and fingerprints. That's double the cleaning surface and double the gaskets we inspect. Each panel seals the firebox on a direct-vent see-through, so a failing gasket on either side matters. We clean both with proper fireplace glass cleaner and check both gaskets during the annual visit. If one side fogs on startup, that's usually normal condensation burning off, not a fault.

Balance and draft are trickier

See-through units are more particular about log placement, air balance, and draft than a standard fireplace, because the flame and venting have to work symmetrically without a solid back wall to draft against. A log nudged out of position — easy to do when you're cleaning both sides — can send soot onto one panel. When we service one, we reset the logs to the manufacturer's diagram exactly and confirm a clean, even flame from both viewing sides.

Same yearly service, more attention

Special attention aside, a see-through gas fireplace still needs the same once-a-year professional service every gas unit gets: clear the off-season spiders and dust from the pilot and burner orifices, test the safety sensors, inspect the venting and cap, and verify gas pressure and connections. Schedule it in late summer, ahead of the mountain rush. Call (828) 545-0525 to book.
