Do vented gas logs produce carbon monoxide?
Yes — vented gas logs produce more carbon monoxide than any other gas hearth product we sell, and that's by design: the tall, realistic yellow flame is tuned for looks, not complete combustion. They're safe because the damper stays locked open and the chimney carries the byproducts out. Run them with the damper closed and they become dangerous fast.
The tradeoff built into that beautiful flame
A crisp blue flame means complete combustion; a rolling yellow one means the fire is burning rich. Vented log sets like the Real Fyre Charred American Oak we carry — hand-painted, cast from real oak — are deliberately tuned toward that yellow, wood-fire look, which is exactly what people buy them for. The cost of the realism is more CO and more heat going up the chimney. This is why we call vented logs ambiance, not a heater, and why the venting rule around them is absolute.
The damper is the entire safety system
Vented logs are installed with a damper clamp — a small piece of code-required hardware that physically prevents the damper from closing all the way. Never defeat it. Every bit of that flame's exhaust is supposed to ride the chimney out of the house, which also means the chimney itself has to hold up its end: clear of nests and debris, liner intact, drafting properly. In the mountains that last part isn't automatic — cold air can sit in a flue like a plug, and WNC's ridges and tall trees produce downdrafts that flatland houses never see. If your logs ever push a smell or haze into the room, shut them down and have the chimney checked.
Soot is your early warning
Black deposits building on the logs or the firebox face mean combustion has drifted from 'charmingly rich' to 'wrong' — commonly a log placed off its factory position, clogged burner ports, or a set running on the wrong fuel orifices, which we see when propane equipment gets swapped in around Fairview, Candler, and Brevard without a proper conversion. Sooty logs and CO production climb together, so treat soot as the visible half of an invisible problem. An annual service catches all of it.
