Do ventless gas logs put out more heat than vented gas logs?

Why the gap is so wide

A vented log set behaves like the wood fire it's imitating: the damper stays open, the chimney drafts, and the tall, realistic yellow flame sends most of its warmth up the flue along with the exhaust. Even a big vented set — our Real Fyre Charred American Oak can burn up to 90,000 BTU — is decorative-first rather than a primary heater, because so little of that output lands in the room.

Ventless flips it. The damper is closed, nothing leaves, and essentially every Btu of gas becomes room heat — vent-free units are rated at 99.9% efficiency for exactly that reason. Sit in front of each for ten minutes and you don't need a spec sheet to tell them apart.

The fine print on ventless heat

That heat comes with conditions. Ventless sets carry Btu caps tied to room size, so you can't drop a large burner into a small den and run it all evening — and everything the flame produces, including water vapor, stays in the house. They're supplemental zone heaters, not a furnace replacement, and they're restricted in bedrooms and bathrooms in many jurisdictions. Used within those lines, the warmth is real; pushed past them, you trade comfort for damp windows and stuffy air.

If serious heat is the actual mission

When someone tells us they want their old wood fireplace to genuinely heat the room, we often steer past logs altogether to a sealed direct-vent gas insert — a Napoleon Oakville X4 or Kozy Heat Chaska 25L. Inserts commonly run 70% efficient or better, exhaust everything outside through a liner, and have none of ventless's moisture or room-size tradeoffs.
