Do ventless gas logs smell more than vented gas logs?
Yes, as a rule. Ventless logs exhaust into the room, so any odor — from combustion itself, dust on the burner, or the initial factory burn-off — stays with you, while vented logs send it all up the chimney. A clean, correctly running ventless set has only a faint odor. A smell you can't ignore is a maintenance flag, not something to live with.
Where the ventless smell comes from
Three sources, mostly. First, the break-in: every new set burns off manufacturing oils and paint curing for the first few fires, and with ventless that happens in your living room instead of up a flue. Second, the air itself — a vent-free burner consumes room air, so candle residue, cooking aerosols, pet dander, and plain dust pass through the flame and come out as odor. Third, a faint combustion smell that sensitive noses pick up even on a healthy set. None of it means the unit is dangerous; it means nothing is leaving the house, which is the whole design.
Vented sets aren't automatically odor-free
The chimney does most of the deodorizing for a vented set, but mountain homes complicate it. WNC's ridges, tall trees, and cold flues cause downdrafts — cold air sits in the chimney like a plug and can push a whiff of exhaust back into the room until the flue warms and the draft establishes. We see this in older Asheville and Black Mountain homes every fall. It's usually a draft problem, not a log problem, and it's fixable.
When a smell is telling you something
A persistent sharp or sooty odor from any gas log set — vented or ventless — means the burner is dirty, the air mixture is off, or a log has been nudged out of position, and the fix is a service visit, not a scented candle. Over the off-season, spiders and dust clog pilot assemblies and burner orifices; an annual cleaning, late summer or early fall, keeps the flame burning clean before you're depending on it.
