Do ventless gas logs look as realistic as vented gas logs?
No — vented logs win on realism, and it isn't close. A vented set throws tall, lazy yellow flames that wrap and lick the logs like a real wood fire, because it doesn't have to burn perfectly clean. Ventless flames must combust precisely, so they run shorter, bluer, and more uniform. Choose vented for the look, ventless for the heat.
Realistic flame is inefficient flame
The thing that makes a wood fire beautiful — that rolling, irregular yellow flame — is incomplete combustion, and a vented set can afford it because the open damper carries the byproducts away. A ventless burner has no such luxury. It has to burn nearly perfectly to be allowed in your living room, so the flame pattern is engineered, tighter, and noticeably more blue at the base. The logs on a ventless set are also fixed — reposition them for looks and you disrupt the combustion the safety listing depends on, which is how sets start sooting.
How good the best vented sets get
A premium vented set is genuinely convincing.
