Vent-free as a heater, not just ambiance

When you're heating from October into April, a vent-free set's appeal is real — with the damper closed, almost all the heat stays in the room, and it runs without electricity, which counts on a cold Haywood night. The one non-negotiable is sizing: match the Btu output to the room's square footage, because an oversized vent-free set in a tight house both overwhelms the space and drives up indoor humidity.

Waynesville also runs 10 to 15 degrees colder than the lower valley towns, so a supplemental heater here works more hours than it would down the mountain. That makes right-sizing and annual service — cleaning the pilot and burner before you depend on it — matter even more.

The Hazelwood open-fireplace problem

A lot of older Hazelwood homes have drafty open masonry fireplaces that send heat straight up the flue. Dropping a vent-free log into one and closing the damper captures that heat, which helps — but if you want a genuine, efficient heater rather than a stopgap, a sealed insert or a direct-vent unit is the stronger play, and it fixes the draft besides.

Natural gas in town, propane on the ridges

Waynesville is mixed-fuel country — natural gas serves much of town while homes up the ridges run propane, and on propane a vent-free set needs the correct orifice and regulator pressure or it soots.
