Do wood pellets sell out in winter — should I buy early?

When a storm hits Jackson County you can't easily run to town for bags, and local shelves thin fast in a cold snap. Lay in the whole winter's supply in fall so a bad-weather week never leaves you short.
Remote means self-sufficient
Out here in the Tuckasegee valley, being the better part of an hour from the nearest big-box supply changes the calculus. Breakdowns and shortages both wait longer for a fix when you're this far from a service center, so the smart move is to remove the mid-winter supply run from the equation entirely — buy your season's tonnage while it's plentiful in late summer or fall. A pellet stove burns roughly a bag a day in steady cold, so plan the pile to your winter and how hard you lean on the stove versus central heat. It's a lot easier to stage a full season now than to chase odd bags around Sylva in January.
Valley moisture is the storage enemy
Sylva's cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade flue liners quickly, and that damp is just as tough on stored pellets. Whether you're in a Dillsboro historic home or a rental near Cullowhee, keep sealed bags on a pallet in a dry garage or shed — off the ground, away from the river-valley damp. A soaked bag is ruined fuel, and moisture is the one thing that undoes an early buy. Fifty minutes from us and even farther from a big supplier, you don't get a cheap second chance on a pallet that molders through the winter, so the dry shed earns its keep.
Maintain it, because help is farther away
