Does a blower increase the heat a fireplace makes, or just move it around?

A blower doesn't make the fireplace produce a single extra BTU — the burner sets the heat output. What it does is move that heat off the appliance and into the room faster, so more of it reaches you instead of stratifying near the ceiling or radiating out slowly. Same heat made, far more of it actually delivered.

The burner makes it; the blower delivers it

Heat production and heat delivery are two separate things. How many BTUs the fireplace makes is fixed by the burner and the fuel — the input and output ratings on the spec sheet. Without a blower, a good share of that heat rises straight up and pools near the ceiling, and the rest radiates out slowly from the front. A blower intercepts the heat at the firebox and pushes it out at seating level, where you're actually sitting.

Why it feels like more heat

Because in practical terms, it is more heat reaching you. The room warms up faster, the temperature evens out top-to-bottom, and warmth carries across a larger space instead of dying a few feet from the glass. Nothing on the rating changed, but the usable heat in your body's comfort zone went up. That's the convective delivery working alongside the radiant heat you'd get either way.

When it's genuinely worth adding
