How does a fireplace blower know when to turn on and off by itself?

Most blowers are run by a snap-disc — a small heat-sensing switch clipped to the firebox that closes the fan circuit once the metal reaches a set temperature, usually around 110 to 120°F, and opens it again as the fireplace cools. You light the fire, and a few minutes later the blower starts on its own; after shutdown it runs a while, then stops.

The snap-disc thermostat

Inside is a little bimetal disc that flexes with temperature. As the firebox heats up, the disc snaps closed and completes the fan's circuit; when things cool back down, it snaps open and the fan shuts off. That built-in delay is the point of the whole design — it keeps the blower from blasting cold air at you during startup, and it keeps the fan running after you shut the fireplace down so it can scavenge the leftover heat instead of wasting it. Set it and forget it.

Speed control and smarter options

On top of the automatic on/off, many units add a variable-speed knob or a rheostat so you can set how hard the fan pushes, and some tie the blower into the fireplace's control board — an IntelliFire-type system, for instance. You still let the snap-disc handle when it runs; you're just choosing how much airflow you want while it does. A remote can make that adjustment from the couch.

When the automatic part misbehaves

If the blower runs while the fireplace is stone cold, refuses to start after the box is clearly hot, or just runs constantly, the problem is almost always the snap-disc or its wiring — not the fire itself.
