How does a gas fireplace remote control work?
A gas fireplace remote sends a radio signal to a small receiver module wired into the fireplace's ignition and gas valve. Press on, and the receiver opens the valve and lights the burner — off the standing pilot, or by firing the igniter on an electronic-ignition unit. On a standing-pilot (millivolt) system the receiver runs on batteries and the valve on the pilot's own power, so it keeps working when the grid is down.
The receiver is the real brain
The handheld remote is just a transmitter. The work happens at the receiver — a small battery-powered box tucked behind the louvers or in the control pocket, wired between your on/off system and the gas valve. Press a button and it closes the circuit that opens the valve and fires the ignition.
On a millivolt system, the pilot itself generates the power to hold the valve open, so the receiver's batteries only need to run the electronics — which is why these keep working through a Helene-style outage when a battery-backup or standing-pilot unit is involved.
What the remote can control
A basic remote does on and off. Step up and you get flame-height up/down, blower speed, a timer, and thermostat modes — depending on the unit and the valve inside it. A Napoleon or Heat & Glo unit with a modulating valve will let the remote raise and lower the flame in steps; a simpler valve just toggles.
The remote can only do what the valve underneath it is built to do, so we match the control to the appliance when we install.
Pairing, batteries, and the usual gremlins
Remotes and receivers pair on a matching code, and most gremlins we get called about — fireplace won't respond, lights on its own, only works up close — trace back to dead batteries, a lost pairing, or the receiver's switch left in the wrong position.
