How does a gas fireplace wall switch work?
A gas fireplace wall switch is a simple low-voltage switch wired to the gas valve with two thin wires. Flip it on and it closes the circuit that tells the valve to open and light the burner. It runs on the tiny millivolt current the pilot generates — not household power — so it works even in an outage.
Not your light switch
A wall switch for a gas fireplace looks like a light switch, but it's doing something different. It's not switching 120-volt house power — it's completing a millivolt circuit. On a standing-pilot or millivolt system, the pilot flame heats a thermopile that generates a small voltage, roughly three-quarters of a volt.
The switch simply opens and closes that circuit. Close it, the main valve opens and the burner lights off the pilot; open it, the burner shuts down. Two wires, no electricity from the wall.
Why that's a mountain advantage
Because the pilot powers the whole thing, a wall-switch millivolt fireplace lights when the grid is down. That's the backup-heat story we tell all winter here: the homes that stayed warm after Helene were the ones with a working gas or wood hearth, and a plain wall switch on a millivolt unit is about as outage-proof as gas controls get.
No batteries, no receiver, no app — just flip and burn. It's a great fit for a primary-heat fireplace in a home that loses power in storms.
When it acts up
Most wall-switch problems are undramatic: a loose wire behind the plate, corrosion at a terminal, or a weak thermopile that no longer makes enough millivolts to hold the valve. Those are inexpensive parts and usually a single visit.
