How can a millivolt gas fireplace run without any electricity?
The pilot flame is the power source. In a millivolt system, the heat of the standing pilot hits a device called a thermopile, which turns that heat into a tiny electrical current — enough to open the gas valve and run the wall switch on its own. No outlet, no batteries. That's why these fireplaces keep heating right through a power outage.
Heat that makes its own power
The trick is a phenomenon called the thermoelectric effect: heat two joined metals and they produce a small electrical current. In a millivolt fireplace, the standing pilot flame constantly bathes a device called a thermopile — a bundle of those metal junctions — and the heat generates a few hundred millivolts of electricity. That's the entire power supply. No outlet, no batteries, nothing to plug in.
Following the current
Here's the whole chain: the pilot heats the thermopile, the thermopile powers the gas valve's coil, and your wall switch or remote simply opens and closes that low-voltage circuit. Flip it on and the self-generated current pulls the valve open; gas flows, the pilot lights the burner, and you have fire — all without a single volt from the utility. It's about as close to a mechanical, foolproof system as gas heat gets.
