Will a gas fireplace still work when the power goes out?
It depends entirely on the ignition system. A gas fireplace with a standing pilot or millivolt controls keeps working with the power out — the pilot generates its own current. An electronic-ignition (IPI) unit needs electricity, but many carry a battery backup that lights it during an outage. What won't run on any of them is the electric blower, so you get radiant heat only.
It comes down to the ignition
Whether your gas fireplace works in an outage depends on how it lights. Standing-pilot and millivolt units generate their own electricity from the pilot flame, so they keep making heat with the grid completely down — nothing to plug in, nothing to fail. Electronic-ignition (IPI) units need power to spark, but most include a battery backup that lights them during an outage.
The battery-backup middle ground
If you have an IPI fireplace, check for a battery holder behind the lower louver — usually AA cells or a 9-volt. When the power drops, the unit switches to those batteries automatically and lights normally. The whole system only works if the batteries are alive, though, which is why we replace them at every annual service. A dead battery pack discovered during an outage is the most avoidable no-heat call we run.
The one thing power still controls
No matter which ignition you have, the electric blower needs wall power. With the grid down you'll get radiant heat — real, comfortable warmth coming straight off the unit — just not the fan pushing it around the room. That's a fair trade when the alternative is a cold house.
