Flat Rock has some of the oldest housing stock we serve — homes dating to the 1800s with oversized open masonry fireplaces and aging clay flue liners. A wood fire in one of those is genuinely outage-proof; it's the gold standard for grid independence. But an open firebox also pulls warm air up the chimney, cracked clay liners are a real hazard, and hauling and tending wood during a storm is work. For many owners the better answer is to keep the character and change the engine underneath.
A sealed insert preserves the room
Dropping a sealed gas insert into that historic firebox — spec'd millivolt — gives you power-optional heat that lights on its own with the grid down, while a new stainless liner brings the flue up to standard. You keep the mantel and the masonry; you lose the draft and the wood-hauling. The self-powered pilot makes its own current, so an outage means full radiant heat off the front of the unit, minus only the fan. We pull the Henderson County permit, line the chimney, and pressure-test the gas line.
